SmartCOMM vs ISIS Papyrus: communications product or process platform?

Short answer

ISIS Papyrus is the bigger platform: it covers case management, document capture and archiving as well as communications, and you run it on-premises or in IBM, Azure or AWS clouds. SmartCOMM is cloud-only software for outbound communications. Pick Papyrus if you want one platform you host yourself; if you only need communications, look at Quadient Inspire or OpenText Exstream too.

SmartCOMM vs ISIS Papyrus isn’t really a contest between two composers. It’s a question of how much you want one vendor to own.

SmartCOMM is cloud software for sending outbound communications like policies, statements and letters. Papyrus does that too, but adds case and process management, inbound document capture and archiving, and it runs on infrastructure you choose. Want the wider field? Pick by your situation

If you only have a minute, start here.

  • Want capture, cases, letters and archive on one platform? Papyrus is built for that.
  • Must run it on your own servers or chosen cloud? Papyrus does. SmartCOMM is cloud only.
  • Only need communications, but self-hosted? Look at Quadient Inspire or OpenText Exstream.
  • Archive is your main gap? See SmartHUB alternatives.

How much one vendor owns

Already run a workflow or case system? A communications product slots in beside it. Want to replace several systems at once? A platform covers more ground.

Breadth has a flip side. One Gartner reviewer says things like a digital mailroom have to be assembled piece by piece. If you buy Papyrus for case management, budget for building the solution, not just licensing it.

Who runs it: you or the vendor

This is the second big filter. Papyrus is something you run. SmartCOMM is something the vendor runs.

With Papyrus, you pick on-premises or IBM, Azure or AWS clouds. No vendor-run SaaS edition is publicly described, so if you don’t want to operate it, ask about managed services from ISIS Papyrus or its partners. And add servers, ops staff and upgrade work to your cost model.

With SmartCOMM, there’s no infrastructure to run, but you take the vendor’s release schedule. A TrustRadius reviewer lists frequent upgrades as a drawback. Our cloud CCM guide helps you weigh the two models.

What users say

Papyrus users praise speed, handling of complex data formats and flexible print post-processing, and report few reliability issues. The gripes: the commercial side can be hard going, and one PeerSpot reviewer says it’s been stretched into a workflow engine it wasn’t designed to be.

SmartCOMM users on TrustRadius like template creation and output delivery, and push back on price, licensing complexity and frequent upgrades.

Where buyers are heading

Both were Leaders in Omdia’s 2024 CCM report. Smart Communications has since been named a Leader by QKS in 2026. Papyrus isn’t in that QKS report.

On PeerSpot, reader attention is moving toward Papyrus. Its evaluators compare it most with Quadient Inspire and OpenText. Keep in mind that’s engagement on one site, not market share.

Your best options

Here’s where to look, based on what you’re really replacing.

ISIS Papyrus

Best for one platform for inbound, cases, letters and archive, on infrastructure you choose

  • 4.5 ★92 Gartner ratings
  • LeaderOmdia 2024
  • 2,500+businesses, per Deep Analysis (2023)

Watch out: you need a team that can build vertical solutions on a general platform.

How to test your shortlist

Run a proof of concept on your hardest templates and one end-to-end case. Price the communications scope separately from case and capture modules. That way you can compare Papyrus fairly with communications-only quotes, and see what the extra platform really costs you.
