SmartPATH alternatives: orchestration for regulated customer journeys

Short answer

Look at the journey tools inside other CCM platforms: Precisely EngageOne RapidCX for the broadest match with print, Quadient Inspire Journey, Messagepoint Conductor for print-heavy tracking, or ISIS Papyrus for journeys that hand off to case work. Marketing tools rarely handle print or regulated documents.

The best SmartPATH alternatives are the journey tools built into other enterprise CCM platforms. Regulated journeys need the documents and audit trail a CCM platform produces, so a marketing tool usually won’t cover it.

SmartPATH is Smart Communications’ journey orchestration product. It automates multi-step servicing journeys, like payment reminders or unfinished applications, across email, SMS, RCS and print. It launched in September 2025, built on technology from Pendula, which Smart Communications bought a month earlier.

Searching “SmartPath” also turns up a finance education app and an AI pathology platform. This page is only about the Smart Communications product.

Pick by the CCM platform you run

Connecting journeys to your document engine is most of the work. So the easiest place to start is usually the journey tool from your CCM vendor.

What SmartPATH offers

At launch, SmartPATH came with a drag-and-drop journey builder, automatic channel failover, reminders, real-time tracking and AI agents that watch customer behavior and sentiment. It connects to SmartCOMM, SmartIQ, SmartHUB, Salesforce and AWS. In February 2026, Smart Communications added AI-assisted orchestration (more in our guide to Smart Communications AI).

There isn’t much independent proof yet. SmartPATH has a single Gartner Peer Insights rating, filed under email marketing rather than CCM. Aragon Research saw the Pendula deal as a move from one-way documents toward two-way customer journeys. If you were a Pendula customer, see Pendula alternatives for contract questions.

The 4 best SmartPATH alternatives

They’re ordered by how much of SmartPATH’s job each one is known to cover. Each works best if you also run that vendor’s CCM platform.

Precisely EngageOne RapidCX

Best for the broadest match, print included, in a managed cloud

  • 4.1 ★12 Gartner reviews (Communicate)
  • 6 channelsprint to contact center

RapidCX runs journeys across mobile app, email, SMS, print, portals and contact centers, with tracking and archiving. In April 2026 Precisely added a tracker that follows each message across channels, plus an AI agent that suggests next steps for staff to approve or reject.

Watch out: the review base is small, and EngageOne has several modules, so confirm what each quote includes.

Quadient Inspire Journey

Best for journey mapping next to a top-rated CCM suite

  • 4.8 ★130 Gartner reviews (Inspire)
  • 4.8 ★130 G2 reviews (Inspire)

Quadient launched Journey in 2021 as a SaaS tool for mapping and running customer journeys. Its real strength is the Inspire suite around it, which has the deepest review record in CCM. If you’re already moving your templates to Inspire, adding Journey keeps documents and journeys with one vendor.

Watch out: little is published on its channels, failover and tracking, so ask for a live journey with a print fallback.

SmartCOMM vs Quadient Inspire →

Messagepoint Conductor

Best for operations where most volume is still printed

  • 4.4 ★69 Gartner reviews (Messagepoint)
  • March 2026came with Sefas

Messagepoint bought Sefas in March 2026 and plans to bring its Conductor tool to customers. Conductor coordinates and tracks high-volume print and digital mail. Good for you if tracking matters as much as digital nudges.

Watch out: ask how far Conductor is joined up with Messagepoint’s content platform today.

SmartCOMM vs Messagepoint →

ISIS Papyrus

Best for journeys that hand off to a person, on your own servers

  • 4.5 ★92 Gartner reviews
  • Self-hostedon-prem, IBM, Azure or AWS

Papyrus combines case and process management, archiving and inbound and outbound communications. It fits when a stuck step should open a case for a staff member instead of sending one more reminder, or when you can’t use vendor-hosted SaaS.

Three tests for your proof of concept

Whatever you pick, make every vendor show you these:

  1. A failed channel. Break one channel on purpose and watch the journey fall back.
  2. A print step that stops. The customer responds digitally, so the letter never goes out.
  3. One customer’s full history. Export everything they received, ready for a complaints or audit team.

Frequently asked questions

What is SmartPATH?

SmartPATH is Smart Communications' journey orchestration product, launched on 17 September 2025. It builds on Pendula, acquired that August, and sends email, SMS, RCS and print with channel failover and AI agents.

How many reviews does SmartPATH have?

As of October 2026, one rating on Gartner Peer Insights (5.0), filed under email marketing. That tells you almost nothing, so ask for live references and test one real journey.

Can a marketing automation platform replace SmartPATH?

Only part of it. Regulated servicing journeys often need a printed fallback, a regulated document mid-journey and an audit trail of what each customer got, so check all three first.

Which SmartPATH alternative supports print in the journey?

Precisely EngageOne RapidCX lists print alongside its digital channels, and Messagepoint says Conductor, gained with Sefas in March 2026, coordinates high-volume print and digital. Ask each vendor to show a print step stopped by a digital response.
