Short answer

Private equity firm Cinven agreed to buy a majority stake in Smart Communications on 1 August 2025. The seller, Accel-KKR, kept a minority stake, and Bloomberg reported a valuation of about $1.8 billion including debt. For customers, it mostly matters at your next renewal.

Wondering who owns the company behind SmartCOMM now? Here’s the Smart Communications Cinven story in one line: on 1 August 2025, private equity firm Cinven agreed to buy a majority stake from Accel-KKR, which kept a minority. Bloomberg reported a valuation of about $1.8 billion including debt.

If you’re a customer, the deal itself won’t change your contract. It matters at your next renewal. Below is what was announced, what’s changed since, and what to ask your account team.

One clarification: this is the customer communications software company, not Smart Communications Inc, the Philippine mobile operator owned by PLDT.

The deal at a glance

Smart Communications confirmed the agreement in a Business Wire release the same day. Here are the facts that matter.

  • Buyer: Cinven, a European private equity firm, took a majority stake. The exact percentage wasn’t disclosed.
  • Seller: Accel-KKR, which had backed the company since 2016, kept a minority stake.
  • Price: not disclosed. Bloomberg, citing people familiar with the matter, put the valuation at about $1.8 billion including debt.
  • Conditions: the deal needed regulatory approvals and the usual closing conditions.
  • Advisers: Law360 reported that Clifford Chance advised Cinven.
  • Customers: the company cited more than 650, including Zurich Insurance, Priority Health, The Pacific Financial Group and The Bancorp.

Cinven said it planned to help the business grow into new regions and industries and to push product innovation. Accel-KKR said revenue grew more than fivefold while it owned the company. Leigh Segall was CEO at the time.

Who owns Smart Communications today

Cinven holds the majority and Accel-KKR a minority. The company’s September 2026 announcements describe its new CFO as appointed after Cinven’s strategic investment.

It’s privately held and doesn’t publish revenue. Its own latest claims: more than 700 enterprise customers and first-half 2026 bookings up 17% year over year, with no breakdown.

What’s changed since the deal

Three things, and each one shapes what you’ll be offered at renewal.

More products to bundle

SmartHUB and SmartPATH launched between June 2025 and September 2025, and AI assistants followed in February 2026. In 2026 the company also started selling its products together as a Customer Engagement Platform.

More products means more possible bundles, which makes per-product prices harder to see. Our Smart Communications AI features page covers the AI releases.

A new commercial team

In September 2026 the company named Rachel Elias-Jones as CFO and Chris Manton-Jones as Chief Commercial and Revenue Officer. Ask your account team whether pricing or packaging will change before your renewal opens.

A push to move more of your systems onto the platform

In October 2026 Smart Communications expanded AI-assisted migration for enterprises running several legacy systems. If you get a proposal to consolidate onto its platform, weigh it against an independent look at SmartCOMM alternatives.

Questions to ask your account team

Private equity ownership doesn’t dictate any one outcome. The smart move is to turn it into specific questions and get the answers in writing.

Pricing and renewals

  • Will per-unit prices for volume, seats and environments change at our renewal?
  • Will you cap annual increases for the whole term?
  • Are any products or features moving into new bundles or tiers?

Our SmartCOMM contract renewal plan shows how to negotiate these, and SmartCOMM pricing lists the cost lines to check.

Roadmap and products

  • Which roadmap items for our products are committed, and by when?
  • How will SmartPATH, SmartHUB and any future acquisitions fit with what we run today?
  • Will the AI features in our current setup stay included?

Support and exit

  • Will our support tier, account team or service levels change?
  • How much notice will you give before retiring a product or feature we rely on?
  • Can we export templates, rules and archived documents if we leave, and on what terms?

What to do next

Don’t renew by default. Use the change of owner as a reason to benchmark the market first.

SmartCOMM holds 4.7 from 69 ratings on Gartner Peer Insights (October 2026). On PeerSpot, its share of CCM reader attention fell from 10.2% to 4.7% over the past year.
