CCM migration tools: what each converter reads, writes and needs from you
Most CCM migration tools only convert into their own vendor's platform, such as Quadient InspireXpress, Messagepoint Rationalizer and OpenText's Exstream tools. So pick your target platform first, then test its tool on your three hardest templates. If you've lost access to the old platform, Elixir says Catalyst works from sample PDFs and data alone.
Shopping for CCM migration tools? Here’s the catch: almost every converter writes only into its own vendor’s platform. So pick your target platform first, then test its tool on your three hardest templates.
These tools pull content, layout and sometimes business rules out of your old platform and rebuild them on a new one. IDC’s Amy Machado said in October 2026 that “AI-assisted template reconstruction is cutting migration timelines.” This page helps developers, architects and SI consultants pick one and test it properly. Use it alongside our CCM migration guide.
Why the platform picks the tool
Because each converter writes into one format, your tool choice mostly follows your platform choice. Don’t fall for a slick converter demo and end up on a platform that doesn’t fit.
Treat every claim on this page as the vendor’s own. None of it is a measured result on your library, and vendor speed or cost percentages mean little until you see them on your own templates.
Filter the tools by what you need
Lost access to the old platform already? Need business rules carried over, not just layout? Tick what matters and see which tools have public claims to back it.
Based on press releases and trade media. A missing tick means nothing public says so, not that the tool can’t do it.
Quadient InspireXpress
- Converts legacy CCM templates, not only Office files: July 2026 coverage says InspireXpress and Migration Stack accelerators automatically convert existing CCM templates.
- Migration capability cited by an analyst: Aspire’s CEO said in March 2025 that Quadient moves customers off legacy systems with InspireXpress and competitor-specific tools.
Messagepoint Rationalizer
- Converts legacy CCM templates, not only Office files: Messagepoint says it migrates content from supported legacy systems.
- Says it carries over business rules: Messagepoint says it carries over business rules, data files, layouts and styles for supported systems.
- Finds shared or duplicate content: Messagepoint describes AI-driven optimization of content before migration.
- Migration capability cited by an analyst: Messagepoint’s September 2026 release says IDC named migration a key strength.
OpenText Exstream tools
- Converts legacy CCM templates, not only Office files: OpenText announced improved migration tools and design accelerators in November 2024.
Elixir Catalyst
- Converts legacy CCM templates, not only Office files: Elixir says it converts legacy and competing CCM templates.
- Works without access to the old platform: Elixir says Catalyst needs only data sources and sample PDF outputs.
- Says it carries over business rules: Elixir says Catalyst infers business and data rules.
- Finds shared or duplicate content: Elixir says Catalyst finds shared resources during conversion.
Kyber Template Import
- Imports Word, XML or PDF files: Kyber announced AI import of Word, XML and PDF templates in July 2025.
Xpertdoc Document Migration
- Converts legacy CCM templates, not only Office files: Xpertdoc said in 2016 its patented tool converts Mosaic, IStream, Calligo, JetForm, Eloquence and xPression documents.
No platform in this list has public evidence for every requirement you ticked. Untick one, or take the combination to vendors as an RFP question.
As of October 15, 2026. Vendor statements, not test results. Prove every tick on your own templates.
Converters built for one platform
Most tools come from a CCM vendor and bring templates onto its own platform. Ask each one whether it reads your old platform’s native template files or only its PDF and Word output. That decides how much logic survives.
Best for teams moving to Quadient Inspire
- Inspirewrites into
Quadient positions it as its route off legacy platforms, alongside competitor-specific converters. Aspire’s CEO said in March 2025 that Quadient has been moving customers off legacy systems this way. Partners like DocVentive, which services Documaker estates, also run migrations.
Watch out: Quadient doesn’t name supported source platforms publicly, so ask.
Best for moving rules and content, not just layout
- Messagepointwrites into
- IDC 2026migration a key strength
Messagepoint says it uses AI to ingest, optimize and migrate content. It’s also used for template rationalization before conversion.
Watch out: the supported legacy systems aren’t listed publicly; get them in writing.
Best for teams already moving to Exstream
- Exstreamwrites into
- Nov 2024tools announced
OpenText added migration tools and design accelerators to ease cloud moves. See our OpenText Exstream review.
Watch out: TrustRadius reviewers say moving into Exstream from other products is hard, so test early.
Smart Communications also announced AI migration tooling in October 2026. As IT Brief reported, it checks libraries for duplication and has customer and vendor teams review each conversion. It converts into SmartCOMM only. Moving the other way? See migrating off SmartCOMM.
Tools that work from your output
A second group reads what your old platform produces, not its internals. That helps when the platform is already switched off, the licence is ending, or nobody can read the template files.
Elixir Catalyst
Best for teams without access to the old platform
- 3.8 ★63 Gartner reviews (Elixir)
- Sep 2025announced
Elixir says Catalyst needs only data and sample PDFs, infers business rules, and converts with quality checks and human oversight. It writes into Elixir Cloud.
Watch out: Elixir’s Gartner score is the lowest well-supported one in our benchmark, so judge the platform as well as the tool.
Kyber Template Import
Best for templates that already live as Word, XML or PDF files
- Jul 2025announced
Kyber, a correspondence platform used in insurance claims, says the tool uses AI to import your files, then business users review the result. It’s included at no extra cost, Kyber says.
You’ll still see Xpertdoc’s 2016 converter in old RFPs. It was patented to convert Mosaic, IStream, Calligo, JetForm, Eloquence and xPression documents. It’s now Experlogix Document Automation, filed under document generation on G2, so check what’s still supported.
Print streams and archives need other tools
Template converters rebuild authoring assets. Print streams like AFP and archived output are a separate problem. Ask each bidder whether it uses its own tools or a third-party converter such as Compart DocBridge.
If your scope includes moving an archive into accessible PDF, test the output on a sample before you sign. Many teams simply leave the old archive in place, read-only, and start fresh at cutover.
How to test a migration tool
Choose the platform first with the CCM vendor scorecard, then test its tool on your own templates. OpenText’s Andy Feest warns that a poor comparison tool can remove content you still need, so people should make every keep-or-cut call.
Give every bidder the same three templates, including the one with your most tangled conditional logic. Then score each proof of concept on:
- Input: native template files, or only PDF and Word output?
- Rules: does conditional logic convert? Count the rules fixed by hand.
- Output: how many samples match the old output with no edits?
- Comparison: is output comparison included for parallel testing?
- Who runs it: your team, or only vendor services?
- Cost: included, add-on, or billed as services?
Put these in your CCM RFP template so every bidder answers the same way. Check the CCM benchmark for platform ratings, and the CCM software guide for the full field.

Frequently asked questions
Is there a vendor-neutral CCM template converter?
Not among the tools with public announcements. Each writes into its own vendor's platform. Print stream and archive converters are a separate category.
Can migration tools convert business rules as well as layout?
Some vendors say so, including Messagepoint and Elixir. Test it on your most complex templates in the proof of concept, and count how many rules needed manual fixes.
Are CCM migration tools included in the license?
It varies, and vendors rarely say. Some are add-ons, some are run only by the vendor's services team, and Kyber includes its import tool at no extra cost. Ask each bidder to state it in the proposal.
