- Print at very high volume? OpenText Exstream.
- Your template library is the problem? Messagepoint.
- Journeys start with a form? Adobe AEM Forms.
- Archive is the priority? Precisely EngageOne Vault.
First, the right Smart Communications
Two unrelated companies share the name, and many company-data sites mix them up. This page is about the software vendor behind SmartCOMM, spun out of UK firm Thunderhead in 2016 and majority owned by Cinven since 2025.
Smart Communications Inc in the Philippines is a mobile operator owned by PLDT, competing with telecoms like Globe Telecom. That’s why lists such as CB Insights put Globe Telecom next to Messagepoint and Quadient. For the ownership story, see the Smart Communications Cinven acquisition.

That’s why “competitors” lists disagree. No vendor here has public evidence against all four product lines.
Who buyers actually compare it with
Directory lists say little about real shortlists. PeerSpot tracks which products its readers put side by side, which is much closer.
Share of PeerSpot comparisons involving Smart Communications that include each product, October 2026.
Source: PeerSpot: Smart Communications comparisons. PeerSpot also lists Smart Communications under its former names Thunderhead and Smart Correspond for Salesforce.
Attention is also drifting. Smart Communications’ share of PeerSpot’s CCM reader attention fell from 10.2% to 4.7% in the year to October 2026, while Quadient Inspire’s rose from 20.0% to 20.5%.
The main SmartCOMM rivals in core CCM
SmartCOMM is sold as cloud or SaaS only, so deployment is usually the first split. Then come volume and content governance.
Best for very high print and batch volumes
- 28%of PeerSpot comparisons
- 4.4 ★76 Gartner reviews
The rival buyers compare most often. You can run it as a managed cloud service or self-host it in containers, and reviewers praise its high-volume batch runs.
Best for a like-for-like swap with a deep review record
- 4.8 ★130 Gartner reviews
- 5×analyst Leader, 2024 to 2026
Quadient has offered Inspire as SaaS and on-premises or hybrid. It has the most reviews and the most published Leader placements of any rival here.
Best for teams whose real problem is template sprawl
- 4.4 ★69 Gartner reviews
- 4×analyst Leader, 2024 to 2026
Messagepoint competes on content: template governance and AI-assisted migration of legacy content. In March 2026 it bought Sefas, a composition platform used by banks and public bodies in France and the UK.
A few others meet SmartCOMM in narrower deals. Papyrus adds case and process management, Precisely’s archive can run in your own AWS account, AEM Forms suits forms-led journeys on Adobe, and Documaker fits Oracle insurers. Compare them: Papyrus, Precisely, Oracle Documaker.
Rivals to SmartIQ, SmartPATH and SmartHUB
Outside core CCM, review sites help less because they file these products in odd categories.
- SmartIQ (forms): Gartner files it under application development, so its “alternatives” are tools like Selenium and Visual Studio. The real comparison is Adobe AEM Forms. See SmartIQ alternatives.
- SmartPATH (orchestration): launched in September 2025 on the Pendula acquisition. Quadient has offered Inspire Journey since 2021, and Precisely added a Next Best Action Agent in April 2026. See SmartPATH alternatives.
- SmartHUB (archiving): launched in June 2025 on technology from Joisto, bought that April. Precisely EngageOne Vault and Papyrus archiving are the closest rivals. See SmartHUB alternatives.
