SmartHUB alternatives: archiving customer communications in regulated industries
First decide what you're archiving. For the statements, letters and policies you send, compare Precisely EngageOne Vault, Quadient Archive and Retrieval and ISIS Papyrus. For employee email and chat, look at Smarsh, Global Relay or Proofpoint instead.
Looking at SmartHUB alternatives? First decide which archive job you’re filling. SmartHUB, Smart Communications’ cloud archive, is pitched for two different jobs, and each has its own set of vendors.
One job is keeping the statements, letters and policies you send. The other is capturing employee email and chat for compliance. Get that right and your shortlist almost writes itself.
Quick note: searches for “Smart Hub” also turn up BT’s broadband router and a utility billing app. This page is only about the Smart Communications archive.
Pick by your situation
Short on time? Start here.
- Need the archive inside your own AWS account? Look at Precisely EngageOne Vault.
- Want customers to view their own documents? Look at Quadient Archive and Retrieval.
- Must keep everything on your own servers, with case work too? Look at ISIS Papyrus.
- Want archiving and CCM from one vendor? Look at Newgen.
- Actually archiving email, chat and Teams messages? You want Smarsh, Global Relay, Proofpoint or Mimecast instead.
Two archive jobs, two shortlists
SmartHUB connects to SmartCOMM and SmartIQ to store what they send. But in September 2026, QKS Group also named Smart Communications a Leader in its digital communications archiving matrix, next to Smarsh, Global Relay, Microsoft and Proofpoint. Here’s how the two jobs differ.
| Customer communications archive | Messaging and governance archive | |
|---|---|---|
| What goes in | Statements, policies, letters and notices, exactly as sent | Employee email, chat and collaboration messages |
| Who uses it | Customer service, complaints, operations, customers | Compliance, legal and eDiscovery teams |
| What matters | Find by customer and date, retention by document type, self-service | Capture across channels, surveillance, legal hold |
| Alternatives | Precisely EngageOne Vault, Quadient Archive and Retrieval, ISIS Papyrus, Newgen | Smarsh, Global Relay, Proofpoint, Mimecast |
Most SmartCOMM and SmartIQ customers need the first job. If your compliance team needs the second, the messaging archives have plenty of reviews. SmartHUB isn’t among the 20 most-reviewed products in that Gartner market.
| Messaging archive | Gartner Peer Insights rating (October 2026) |
|---|---|
| Mimecast Cloud Archive | 4.7 from 173 ratings |
| Proofpoint Archive | 4.6 from 132 ratings |
| Smarsh Enterprise Platform | 4.7 from 67 ratings |
| Global Relay Archive | 4.7 from 48 ratings |
What SmartHUB promises
Smart Communications says SmartHUB runs on AWS with no hardware, keeps documents in tamper-proof storage, applies retention rules across jurisdictions and tracks each document’s history. Its CTO said it can take in up to one million documents an hour, though no test details were published.
There are no public user reviews yet. So treat these as claims to test, not proof.
Compare the archives side by side

The SmartHUB alternatives worth a call
Each archive works best next to its own vendor’s composition engine. Whichever you pick, ask how documents from your other systems get in.
Best for keeping the archive inside your own AWS account
- Your AWShosting option, May 2026
- AI searchannounced Sept 2026
Precisely announced that Vault can run in your own AWS environment, so customer data stays inside the walls your security team already governs. Its RapidCX cloud service archives what it sends, and new AI search lets staff find old documents by asking in plain language.
Watch out: EngageOne is a family of modules, so confirm what each quote covers.
Quadient Archive and Retrieval
Best for customer self-service and fast search
- 4.8 ★130 Gartner reviews (Inspire)
- Legal holdbuilt in
Built for high-volume output, it indexes every word, supports legal hold and lets customers pull up their own documents on any device. It’s also part of Quadient’s SaaS edition, Inspire Evolve. A natural pick if you compose with Quadient Inspire.
Watch out: most public detail dates from its 2019 launch, so ask what’s changed.
Best for self-hosted archives that also run case work
- 4.5 ★92 Gartner reviews
- Self-hostedon-prem, IBM, Azure or AWS
Papyrus covers archiving, case and process management, and inbound and outbound mail in one place. It suits you if the archive must live on your own infrastructure.
Watch out: it’s a whole platform, which may be more than an archive-only project needs.
Newgen
Best for one vendor for archiving and CCM
- Notable VendorForrester archiving, Q3 2026
Forrester named Newgen in its 2026 archiving overview for document archiving, long-term preservation and discovery. You can run it as private SaaS, shared SaaS or on-premises. Compare it in the CCM benchmark.
Watch out: less public detail on customer access and scale, so ask for a demo.
Moving an archive is its own project
Switching archives isn’t like switching composition engines. Old documents have to stay findable for their full retention period, and older formats may need converting. Our guide to accessible customer communications covers the standards.
Ask every vendor these six questions, Smart Communications included, and drop them into your CCM RFP template:
- Retention: can rules vary by document type and jurisdiction, and can you prove storage can’t be altered?
- Real speed: what ingestion and retrieval rates have you measured for a customer my size?
- Hosting: can it run in our own cloud account or data center?
- Other engines: can documents from our other systems come in through APIs?
- Moving in: can our current archive and its indexes come across with their audit history?
- Leaving: in what format can we export everything, with metadata?
